Description
Vintage and original black and white prints of slash pine thinning in Florida, I believe during the 1940's. I received these framed prints from a retiring forester that worked in Cantonment, Florida on his last day in 1992. I took the back paper off the frame of one of the prints and opened it to see if the back of the photo is dated and it is not. Stamped "Credit Florida Forest Service". The period dress and use of crosscut saws I believe places the photograph in the 1940s. The Florida Pulp and Paper Company mill in Cantonment, Florida opened in 1940 (later became St. Regis) and utilized pine shortwood bolts, consistent with the photos. I believe the photographs are from a point nearby in Escambia County, Florida. The second photograph is a stack of pine shortwood bolts in front of the forest they were thinned from. Likely hand stacked and waiting to be loaded on a truck.
Frames m
easure 10 3/8" wide x 8 3/8" long x 3/8" deep.
The frames are in good condition and sturdy. They do have some nicked spots missing paint. The glass is in good condition. The prints are in excellent condition, no stains or tears. The back is in fair condition. This is the same condition I received them in 1992.
Good addition to forest history / memorabilia collection.
