Iron Heads GC, HyFlyers GC pull off upsets, advance to LIV Golf team championship semis

CARROLLTON – Kevin Na’s Iron Heads pulled off the biggest upset of the afternoon at the LIV Golf Dallas Team Championship on Friday at Maridoe Golf Club, prompting some classic broadcaster hyperbole.
“Forget March Madness!
“This is September insanity!”
Not quite, actually, but Brooks Koepka and his Smash team probably didn’t care for it.

Scott Vincent made a hole-in-one to rally the Iron Heads and Jinihiro Kozuma finished it off to allow the bottom-ranked team to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
Otherwise, Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers beat Torque, Sergio Garcia’s eliminated the Majestiks, Dustin Johnson’s 4 Aces whipped the RangeGoats and Louis Oosthuizen’s Stinger beat the Cleeks.
The defending champion Crushers, led by SMU’s Bryson DeChambeau, drew a first-round bye, as did Legion XIII and Ripper.
Play will resume Saturday with four more matches – two singles and foursomes – with the team reaching two points advancing. The Sunday finals will be stroke play in which the scores from all four players on each of the remaining four teams counting toward the final score.
Match scores:
DeChambeau welcomed the announcement from the PGA of America that LIV Golf players are eligible to compete in both the PGA Championship and U.S. Ryder Cup teams going forward.
“I’ve always had a tremendous respect for the PGA of America,” he said, “and what they’ve done for junior golf and other things.”
He called the statement “great reassurance” for players seeking a pathway to the PGA and Ryder Cup.
“And I think it’s just the start,” he said. “A great first step.”
